  8. This book should be titled "The Penguin *Political* History of Canada" -
  9. apart from a final chapter on Canada's cultural development it concentrates
  10. almost exclusively on people, parties, wars, constitutional changes, etc. 
  11. This produces a rather dissatisfying overall effect, but on the plus side the 
  12. old-fashioned chronological narrative makes for a very readable and smooth
  13. flowing book.

  15. It needs following up with a good economic and social history, but the 
  16. Penguin History isn't a bad read if you are stuck indoors for an afternoon 
  17. with nothing else to do.
